GENERAL DESCRIPTIONand#8226;The Law Enforcement Defense Division (LEDD) of the Office of the Attorney General represents the stateand#8217;s law enforcement agencies and their officials employees in civil proceedings in both federal and state court. LEDD is seeking a legal assistant to perform legal and administrative tasks. Work involves creating initial drafts of legal documents, coordinating discovery documents for use in legal proceedings; assisting attorneys in preparation for trial including organizing notebooks, exhibits and witnesses; and managing attorneyand#8217;s caseload.and#8226;The OAG is a dynamic state agency with over 4,000 employees throughout the State of Texas. Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) experience the challenge and honor of public service while enjoying a healthy work-life balance; hands-on legal experience; and engaging camaraderie in Austin, the scenic and lively capital of Texas.ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONSand#8226;Schedules and prepares pleadings, discovery, motions, briefs, summary judgments, legal correspondence, and other legal documentsand#8226;Researches and analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, and rules and regulationsand#8226;Coordinates the service of subpoenas, service of notices of deposition, and preparation of other legal documentsand#8226;Coordinates, assembles, and prepares evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and documents for use in legal proceedingsand#8226;Checks citations, quotations, footnotes, and references for accuracyand#8226;Schedules, attends, and assists in preparation for hearings, trials, meetings, interviews, appellate arguments, depositions, and docket callsand#8226;Schedules and prioritizes attorney caseloads; organizes case files; attends initial interviews and depositions; conducts investigations; and prepares chronologies, fact summaries, and witness filesand#8226;Reviews and performs redacting of confidential documents for filing with various courtsand#8226;Files pleadings with courtsand#8226;Assists in responding to public information requestsand#8226;Travels throughout the state to conduct site visits, meet clients and witnesses, attend in-person court appearances and mediations, and other in-person litigation activitiesand#8226;Performs related work as assignedand#8226;Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functionsand#8226;Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work scheduleand#8226;Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected informationand#8226;Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrityLegal Assistant II: All the above functions for a Legal Assistant I, Plus:and#8226;Performs routine legal assistant work.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSLegal Assistant I:and#8226;Education: Graduation from high school or equivalentand#8226;Education: Graduation from a course of study for paralegalsand#8226;Experience: Three years of full-time experience as a legal assistant working civil litigation, legal secretary, or general office experience in a legal environment; may substitute ninety credit hours from an accredited college or university with major coursework in law or a related field on a year-for-year basisand#8226;Knowledge of relevant law and legal principles and practicesand#8226;Knowledge of State and Federal Civil Proceduresand#8226;Excellent organization/administrative skills, including a strong, consistent attention to detail and organized work styleand#8226;Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlinesand#8226;Skill in effective oral and written communication (Note: Writing sample may be required for selected interviewees.)and#8226;Skill in conducting legal researchand#8226;Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision makingand#8226;Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedbackand#8226;Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environmentand#8226;Ability to provide excellent customer serviceand#8226;Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSAand#8226;Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG workspace within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)and#8226;Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.and#8226;Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related traveland#8226;Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%Legal Assistant II: All the above qualifications for a Legal Assistant I, Plus:and#8226;Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis: legal assistant, legal secretary, or general office experience in a legal environmentPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSand#8226;Experience: Two years of full-time experience as a legal assistant in civil litigationand#8226;Knowledge: Legal terminology and principlesand#8226;Skills: Perform legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis or other research toolsand#8226;Certification: CLA, CP or RPTO APPLYTo apply for a job with the OAG, electronic applications can be submitted through CAPPS Recruit.
